  • Arjaa Tailings Calibration Plant Inaugurated in Suhar

Muscat – The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) has officially inaugurated Oman’s first facility dedicated to recycling copper from mining waste, marking a major milestone in the sultanate’s green industrial strategy.

The RO 41 million Arjaa Tailings Calibration Plant, developed by Green Tech Mining and Services, is located in Suhar and represents a pioneering step in sustainable mining. The plant uses advanced, eco-friendly technologies to process legacy mining waste into high-quality copper cathodes, making it the first facility of its kind in Oman.

The inauguration ceremony was held under the patronage of H E Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, and attended by senior government officials and industry representatives.

This strategic project forms part of Oman Vision 2040 and the Oman Industrial Strategy 2040, which aim to maximise the added value of local resources, localise industries, and strengthen the sultanate’s industrial competitiveness. The integrated complex was developed through a partnership between BPG Group and Oman Mining Company, with direct support from MoCIIP.

Production at the plant is scheduled to begin in June 2025, with an initial output of 60 tonnes of copper cathodes per year. By December 2026, capacity is expected to scale up to 12,000 tonnes annually, positioning Oman as a key regional player in sustainable copper production.

Speaking at the event, H E Dr Saleh bin Saeed Masan, Under-secretary for Commerce and Industry at MoCIIP, described the facility as a “qualitative leap” for the sultanate’s industrial base. “This project is a practical example of clean technology in action, and a testament to the government’s commitment to integrating sustainability into industrial development,” he said.

Khalid bin Salim al Qasabi, Director General of Industry at MoCIIP, added that the project reflects the ministry’s efforts to promote industrial ventures that meet international environmental and technical standards.

Imran Shaikh, Managing Director of Green Tech Mining and Services, emphasised the long-term vision behind the project, noting that it stems from a partnership initiated in 2018. “Launching the first phase of production using renewable energy is a strong reflection of our commitment to sustainability and Oman’s green economy,” he said.

The Arjaa Tailings Calibration Plant is expected to play a pivotal role in transforming mining waste into valuable resources while advancing Oman’s transition toward a sustainable and innovation-driven industrial future.

  • Oman Inaugurates Nation’s First Copper Waste Recycling Plant

Suhar, Oman – In a landmark step toward green industrialisation and sustainable resource management, Oman has inaugurated its first industrial facility dedicated to transforming legacy copper mining waste into high-purity copper. The plant, powered by renewable energy and eco-friendly technologies, aligns closely with Oman Vision 2040 goals for sustainable growth.

The facility, located in the Wilayat of Suhar, was officially opened under the patronage of Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, with attendance from senior government officials, industry leaders, and private-sector stakeholders.

Developed by Green Tech Mining and Services, in partnership with Oman Mining Company and Austria-based BPG Group, the RO 41 million project is the first of its kind in the Sultanate.

    Turning Waste into Value

The initiative aims to reprocess historical copper mining waste, converting environmental liabilities into economic opportunities. The first production phase begins in June 2025 with an annual output of 60 tonnes of copper cathodes. By December 2026, capacity will expand to 12,000 tonnes annually, strengthening Oman’s presence in the regional green mining sector.

    Voices from the Launch

    • Dr Saleh bin Said Masan, Under-Secretary for Commerce and Industry, hailed the plant as a “qualitative leap” for Oman’s industrial future, emphasising its role in combining sustainability with diversification.
    • Khalid bin Salim al Qasabi, Director-General of Industry, described the project as a model for advanced industrial development supported by regulatory streamlining and high technical standards.
    • Ernst Grissemann, CEO of BPG Group, highlighted the long-term commitment to innovation and sustainability, noting the plant’s renewable energy use and zero-waste approach.

    Strategic Impact

This milestone supports the Oman Industrial Strategy 2040, which focuses on value-added production, localisation of industries, and high-tech investment. The sustainably recycled copper cathodes produced in Suhar will be vital for global decarbonisation supply chains, positioning Oman as a hub for green transformation in the mining sector.
With this pioneering initiative, Oman underscores its commitment to innovation-led development, environmental stewardship, and economic diversification — offering a blueprint for sustainable industrial growth across the region.

  • Transforming Mining Legacies into a Sustainable Future

At BPG Alternative Minerals Reserves AG, we turn the environmental challenges of the past into opportunities for the future. Across the globe, millions of tonnes of mining waste and abandoned sites stand as reminders of an earlier industrial age — but we see them differently.
To us, these are not scars on the landscape, but untapped resources waiting to be responsibly reclaimed.

Through innovative remediation technologies, land restoration, and advanced mineral recovery, we transform legacy mining waste into high-quality materials such as copper — a metal vital to electrification, renewable energy, and the transition to a low-carbon economy. Our approach combines environmental science with modern asset management and digital innovation, including tokenization, to unlock new forms of sustainable value.

More than resource recovery, our mission is about renewal. We clean acidic water, rehabilitate ecosystems, and return land to nature — creating safer, healthier environments for local communities. Every project we undertake is a step toward a circular, responsible, and regenerative mining future.

At BPG, we are transforming yesterday’s waste into tomorrow’s resources — for people, for the planet, and for the future.
